With so much information out there, we find ourselves looking for the cleanest foods, cleaning products, and now feminine care products?! It can be overwhelming to figure out what’s good AND safe for you. The conversation around heavy metals and toxins in feminine products can be scary but is manageable and worth exploring. Let's dive in and review what you need to know to make informed choices about period products.
A 2024 study found traces of these metals in certain tampons. This has understandably raised concerns, but what is really going on?
First things first: heavy metals like lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium are substances that are naturally found in soil as well as industrial processes.
In large amounts, these elements can be toxic to humans. While these metals are generally harmful, the trace amounts found in some products are usually very low.
Heavy metals can sometimes appear in tampons due to the materials used to make them. For example:
- Cotton Tampons: Cotton is a natural product, grown from soil, and can sometimes absorb environmental pollutants.
- Bleaching Agents: Some tampons use bleach to make them white, which could potentially lead to trace metal contamination.
Most reputable tampon brands are aware of these concerns and take steps to minimize any risks. Brands may individually state their safety precautions on their website. However, no brand names were mentioned in the 2024 study.
While the studies demonstrate there are trace amounts of these elements in many of the tampons, further studies are needed to understand if these elements are leaching out into women's bodies.
Navigating the world of period products can be confusing, but here are some tips to help you pick the best and safest options for you.
Non-organic tampons are not made with 100% cotton so they may have harsh chemicals and additives from the other ingredients. But may have lower levels of arsenic and other naturally derived elements.
Organic tampons are made from cotton that’s grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides. These tampons often come with certifications that show they are free from unnecessary additives, they use words like "Certified Organic" or "Chemical-Free". Some organic products may contain arsenic, so reading labels, doing research on the brand, and reaching out to them about their manufacturing and safety practices is important.
Some brands to consider are:
- Natracare
- Lola
- The Honey Pot
- Seventh Generation
When looking for feminine products be on the lookout for products with minimal ingredients. Avoid tampons that contain fragrances, dyes, or synthetic materials.
If you’re still unsure about tampons, there are other period products that you might want to explore:
- Menstrual Cups/ Discs: Reusable and can last for years with proper care.
- Period Underwear: Absorbent and comfortable.
- Reusable Cloth Pads: Eco-friendly and customizable.
Understanding what goes into the products you use every day is important. While the presence of heavy metals in tampons is generally minimal, it’s always a good idea to stay informed and make choices that align with your health and values. There is much more research to be done, and we will update you as it becomes available.
Your period products should work for you and help you feel comfortable and confident.
Remember, it’s all about finding what makes you feel your best during your period. Whether you stick with tampons or explore new options, you’ve got this!
