Summer is here, bringing long, sun-filled days full of fun and adventure. But while the sunshine is welcome, rising temperatures also bring the risk of extreme heat. High heat can be dangerous—especially for children, whose bodies heat up faster than adults’ and who may not recognize the warning signs of heat-related illnesses.
Here are eight essential tips to help keep your kids safe and cool when temperatures soar:
1. Stay Hydrated: Water Is Key
When kids are running around outdoors, they're using up energy and losing fluids—often faster than they realize. Make sure they drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. It’s a good habit to encourage them to drink before thirst kicks in.
Avoid sugary drinks like soda or juice. Water is the best option, but for a little extra flavor, try adding slices of fruit. During intense activity or sports, consider drinks with electrolytes—but be mindful of high sugar content.
2. Dress in Light, Breathable Clothing
Comfort matters, but so does cooling. Choose light-colored, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton to help air circulate and body heat escape.
Wide-brimmed hats offer extra protection from direct sun, and don’t forget sunglasses to protect sensitive eyes from UV rays.
3. Create Shade Wherever You Go
Whether you're at the park, beach, or backyard, shade is essential. Direct sun exposure can quickly lead to overheating and sunburn. Pack an umbrella, tent, or pop-up canopy to create a cool spot wherever you are.
4. Time It Right: Avoid the Hottest Hours
The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so plan outdoor activities during the early morning or late afternoon. If you're heading to the beach or park, aim for cooler times of day.
If playing outside during peak heat is unavoidable, choose water-based activities like splash pads, kiddie pools, or water balloon games to keep everyone cool and refreshed.
5. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can develop quickly. Be alert for warning signs like:
- Dizziness or fainting
- Nausea or vomiting
- Excessive sweating—or no sweating
- Red, flushed skin
- Headache
- Fatigue or confusion
If your child shows any of these symptoms, move them to a cooler spot immediately, offer water, and seek medical help if symptoms persist or worsen.
6. Sunscreen Is a Must
UV rays can still cause damage—even on cloudy days. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every two hours, and more often if your child is swimming or sweating.
Cover all exposed skin, including the ears, neck, and tops of feet. Don’t forget lip balm with SPF. We recommend mineral-based sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for a safer, effective option.
7. Know When to Stay Indoors
Sometimes, it's simply too hot to be outside. If there's an excessive heat warning or the temperature feels overwhelming, it’s perfectly fine to stay indoors. Keep your home cool with air conditioning or fans.
No AC? Visit a local library, community center, or mall for a break from the heat. Indoor crafts, board games, and reading are great alternatives for fun without the sun.
8. Keep Emergency Numbers Handy
Be prepared. Keep a list of emergency contacts somewhere visible and easily accessible. Know the location of the nearest hospital or urgent care, and have a basic first aid kit on hand just in case.
Final Thoughts Summer is a time for exploration, adventure, and play—but it’s also a time to stay mindful of safety. With a little planning and awareness, you can help your kids enjoy the best of summer while staying healthy and cool.
Let the adventures begin—just with a little extra care in the heat!
