Car seats and booster seats are among the most important tools for protecting children while traveling in a vehicle. However, even the best car seat can only do its job when it is installed and used correctly. Proper use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.

Car Seat Misuse is Common

Studies show that many child restraints are not being used correctly:

Only 12%–20% of car seats are installed and used correctly
Approximately 33% to 36% of children under age 12 involved in a fatal traffic crash were not restrained at all

Proper Restraint Use Saves Lives

When used correctly, car seats and booster seats dramatically improve a child’s safety:

Infants (under 1 year): Car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% to 82%
Toddlers (ages 1-4): Proper restraints reduce the risk of fatal injury by 54% to 82%
Children (ages 4-7): Booster seats reduce the risk of injury by 59% compared to seat belts alone

Moving children to the next stage of restraint too soon can put them at greater risk:

89% of children are transitioned to an adult seat belt before they are ready
23% of children are moved to a booster seat too early
